Anthem Announces Coverage for Balloon Sinus Dilation!

Up until seven years ago, patients with chronic sinusitis that were not resolved with antibiotic therapy would go on to have endoscopic sinus surgery at the hospital or surgery center. This would require general anesthesia, pain medication and several weeks of recovery.

Balloon Sinus Dilation was introduced in 2005 and derived from the field of cardiology, where tiny balloons have been used for years to gently dilate blocked arteries. The goal of Balloon Sinus Dilation is similar, which is to open blocked sinus passages to allow for adequate ventilation and restore natural drainage. Several well designed clinical studies have proven Balloon Sinus Dilation to be a durable, long-term solution for patients.

In 2011, Dr. Gould was the first in St. Louis and one of the first in the country to bring this cutting-edge procedure to the office. He developed protocols to achieve optimal patient comfort while eliminating the need for general anesthesia. The procedures takes about 15 minutes, patients return to normal activities within a day or two and the need for pain medication is much less compared to sinus surgery. Nearly 500 physicians from across the country visited the St. Louis Louis Sinus Center to observe Dr. Gould's techniques and strategies so they can implement the procedure in their own practices.

Having Balloon Sinus Dilation performed in the office is not only convenient for patients, but it dramatically reduces the cost to the overall healthcare system. For this reason, most insurance plans cover In-Office Balloon Sinus Dilation. Anthem, the largest member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, is the nation’s second largest health benefits company with plans that cover over 40 million lives, or 12.5% of the population of the United States.

Recently, Anthem announced they will now cover Balloon Sinus Dilation! This is fantastic news for Anthem patients!
