NASAL POLYP CARE IN ST. LOUIS, MO

Nasal Polyps: Understanding the Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options in St. Louis, MO

Evaluation-Based Care for Persistent Sinus Symptoms

Nasal polyps are common but often overlooked. If left untreated, they may contribute to persistent sinus issues, nasal obstruction, and reduced quality of life.

At St. Louis Sinus Center, our ENT team performs thorough diagnostic evaluations to determine whether nasal polyps may be contributing to your symptoms. We offer patient-centered treatment options tailored to your anatomy, history, and care goals.

Concerned About Sinus Symptoms?

What Are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that form on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. While small polyps may cause little to no symptoms, larger or multiple growths can block airflow, impair sinus drainage, and lead to chronic symptoms. They may appear singly or in clusters.

Concerned About Sinus Symptoms?

What Causes Nasal Polyps?

The exact cause of nasal polyps isn’t always clear, but they are often linked to chronic inflammation of the nasal and sinus tissues. Contributing factors may include:

  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Allergic rhinitis (environmental allergies)
  • Non-allergic asthma
  • Aspirin sensitivity
  • Cystic fibrosis (especially in children)

Common Symptoms of Nasal Polyps

  • Persistent nasal congestion or runny nose
  • Facial pressure or sinus pain
  • Postnasal drip
  • Decreased or lost sense of smell or taste
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Snoring or sleep disturbances

Symptoms vary depending on the number and size of the polyps. If symptoms persist or worsen, an ENT evaluation is recommended.

How We Diagnose Nasal Polyps

Our ENT specialists use a combination of tools to assess sinus health and detect polyps:

  • Nasal endoscopy: A small scope is used to view inside the nasal passages
  • CT imaging: Helps visualize the extent of inflammation or obstruction
  • Review of symptoms and medical history

This diagnostic approach allows us to create a personalized care plan based on findings.

Nasal Polyp Treatment Options

Treatment depends on symptom severity, polyp size, and response to past care.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Medications may help reduce inflammation and manage symptoms:

  • Nasal corticosteroids
  • Saline irrigation
  • Oral corticosteroids (short term)

⚠️ Some medications may be used off-label depending on your provider’s clinical judgment. Medications can help reduce symptoms but may not eliminate larger polyps or prevent recurrence.

Surgical Treatment: Endoscopic Polypectomy

If symptoms persist or polyps are extensive, endoscopic sinus surgery (polypectomy) may be considered.

  • Performed under local or general anesthesia
  • Minimally invasive: no external incisions
  • Removes obstructive polyps using a nasal endoscope

While many patients experience symptom relief, results vary and recurrence is possible. Ongoing follow-up care and inflammation management may be needed.
