What Are Allergies?

Allergies are the immune system’s overreaction to a typically harmless substance called an allergen. Allergens may be airborne, ingested, or come in contact with the skin.

Common allergens include:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Mold
  • Pet dander
  • Certain foods (like milk, eggs, shellfish, nuts, fish, soy, and wheat)
  • Certain medications
  • Environmental irritants
  • Insect venom
  • Chemical pollutants

Allergy symptoms vary per patient, but common symptoms include:

  • Frequent and uncontrollable sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose with thin, watery, and clear discharge
  • Postnasal drip, or mucus dripping down the back of the throat
  • Coughing and/or wheezing
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Anaphylaxis in severe cases

If you’re experiencing ongoing, persistent, or severe symptoms, it’s important to schedule a consultation with a healthcare provider.

Allergy Symptoms Vary Depending on Trigger Exposure

Airborne allergens like pollen and pet dander often cause allergic rhinitis symptoms, such as:

  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion or obstruction
  • Runny nose
  • Coughing or wheezing

On the other hand, food or medication allergies may cause more systemic or severe allergic reactions, such as:

  • Respiratory symptoms
  • Skin rashes or hives
  • Swelling
  • Digestive upset
  • Anaphylaxis, in serious cases

How St. Louis Sinus Center Approaches Allergy Care and Management

Our team’s process for allergy management and care may include:

ALLERGY TESTING

We start our process with a full and detailed assessment of your symptoms and their severity. This may be done via skin or blood tests, whichever may be most appropriate to your condition. We also take a detailed evaluation of your medical history, environmental allergen exposure, and lifestyle.

CUSTOM ALLERGY TREATMENT PLANNING

Once we receive and interpret your allergy test results, we collaborate to create a care plan tailored to your individual condition and lifestyle. While personalized plans are designed to align with your health goals, outcomes are not guaranteed and vary by individual.

LONG TERM ALLERGY MANAGEMENT & SUPPORT

Your allergy management and care plan may include:

• Medications like antihistamines, decongestants, nasal corticosteroid sprays, and pain relievers for temporary symptom relief.

• Sublingual immunotherapy (‘allergy drops’) is FDA-approved for allergens such as grass, ragweed, and dust mites. For other allergens, use is considered off-label and has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or efficacy. Be sure to discuss potential risks and benefits with your provider.

• Lifestyle and environmental modifications may help minimize your exposure to allergens at home, school, or work.
