DEVIATED SEPTUM TREATMENT IN ST. LOUIS, MO

Individualized Evaluation and Care Plans

At St. Louis Sinus Center, our team of ENT and sinus experts has years of experience in diagnosing and treating deviated septum conditions. A deviated septum is a common but often overlooked anatomical variation that may contribute to nasal obstruction, sinus infections, and breathing difficulty.

If you experience persistent nasal blockage, chronic sinus infections, or difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils, a deviated septum could be a contributing factor. Our ENT providers offer thorough evaluation and individualized care plans tailored to your symptoms and nasal anatomy.

Struggling with Nasal Obstruction or Breathing Issues?

What Is a Deviated Septum?

The nasal septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that separates the left and right sides of the nasal cavity. In some individuals, the septum is off-center or crooked, creating uneven airflow and potentially leading to symptoms like congestion or facial pressure. A deviated septum may be present at birth, develop due to injury, or progress over time due to aging.

Common Symptoms

  • Nasal congestion or blockage (one or both sides)
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Recurrent or chronic sinus infections
  • Postnasal drip
  • Facial pressure or discomfort
  • Snoring or disrupted sleep (in some cases)

These symptoms can vary in severity depending on the degree of septal deviation. It’s important to consult with an ENT specialist to determine the true cause of persistent nasal or sinus issues.

Treatment Options for a Deviated Septum

Treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms and your nasal anatomy. Options include:

Non-Surgical Management

For milder cases or when surgery is not indicated, medications may help relieve symptoms:

  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays
  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines
  • Saline rinses or sprays

⚠️ Note: These therapies may ease symptoms, but they do not correct the septal deviation itself.

Surgical Treatment: Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a common surgical procedure that repositions or reshapes the septum to improve airflow. It is typically recommended when symptoms persist despite medication.

  • Outpatient procedure performed under local or general anesthesia
  • Internal incisions only — no external scarring
  • Often completed in 30 to 90 minutes

⚠️ Results vary, and as with any surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, discomfort, swelling, and, rarely, septal perforation. Your ENT provider will review all risks and benefits during your pre-procedure consultation.
