Expertise & Recognitions

James D. Gould, M.D., F.A.C.S.

In 2005, new advancements in sinus care lead way to the FDA approval of Balloon Sinus Dilation. The technology was mainly performed in hospitals and surgery centers, but in 2010 Dr. Gould began transitioning the procedure into his office. He felt the transition only made sense – the downtime for the patient is dramatically less (typically 1 day), there’s no need for general anesthesia and the cost is much less for the patient and healthcare system.

Since 2010, Dr. Gould has performed thousands of In-Office Balloon Sinus Dilation procedures and is known by his peers as a pioneer. Regularly, ENT surgeons travel across the country to the St. Louis Sinus Center to observe and learn his techniques for In-Office Balloon Sinus Dilation. As a result of his extensive training initiatives, he received the National Center of Excellence Award.

In 2012, Dr. Gould was invited to participate in the Open Forum where hundreds of his colleagues gathered at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City to share and learn the latest advancements in rhinology (sinus) care. Dr. Gould performed the Balloon Sinus Dilation procedure on three patients at the St. Louis Sinus Center while the procedures were telecast live, via satellite, to the Open Forum.

In 2012, the largest ENT practice in the country gathered for Dr. Gould's presentation on his techniques for In-Office Balloon Sinus Dilation.

Later in 2012 and then again in 2013, Dr. Gould was a guest panelist at several international rhinology meetings. As a guest panelist, Dr. Gould shared his expertise with performing minimally invasive sinus procedures in his office.

In 2013, Dr. Gould and several other sinus experts from across the country were principal investigators in a pivotal study called REMODEL. REMODEL, published in the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy, was the first randomized, multi-center clinical trial to compare traditional endoscopic sinus surgery to in-office balloon sinus dilation. REMODEL demonstrated in-office balloon sinus dilation to be as effective as traditional sinus surgery at improving sinus symptoms long term, but with less post-operative pain and faster recovery time.

In February 2014, Dr. Gould was selected by Entellus Medical to perform the first ever LIVE In-Office XprESS Balloon Sinus Dilation case telecast via internet stream to the world. The telecast was designed to showcase Dr. Gould's techniques with in-office balloon sinus dilation and how simple the procedure is to undergo for the patients. Click here to watch the full case.

Dr. Gould was the lead author of a Landmark Study titled, "In-Office, multisinus balloon dilation: 1-Year outcomes from a prospective, multicenter, open-label trial.” On February 14, 2014, the study was published in the American Journal of Rhinology & Allergy and made waves within the medical community. The results of this study are similar to previously published studies and underscore the proven safety, efficacy, high success rate and patient satisfaction of In-Office Balloon Sinus Dilation.

On a regular basis, Dr. Gould is a guest on Channel 4’s KMOV Great Day St. Louis where he discusses the latest advances in sinus care. Dr. Gould made Great Day St. Louis history by being the first physician to perform a procedure LIVE on the set of the show. During this procedure, Dr. Gould performed a multi-sinus balloon dilation case all while the patient was under local anesthesia. The goal of the live on-set procedure was to show viewers how simple, fast and easy Balloon Sinus Dilation is.
